Le Moulin de Salazar at Montbarla is a lovely old water mill, dating from the 1800’s. Its owners, Bernard and Paul ette Gris – Bernard is French, Paul ette English - are always on hand to offer help and advice and these wonderful and welcoming hosts will make sure your stay is as perfect as you’d wish! Their four fabulous gites – spacious, light and airy apartments with all modern amenities - are set within the beautiful old mill building, all enjoying elevated views over the surrounding “Quercy” countryside and the sound of the millstream rushing beneath the Moulin’s stone walls.
Toulouse is the nearest airport, about 50 minutes’ drive away, but the airports of Rodez, Carcassonne , Bergerac and Bordeaux are all within a two hour drive. Car hire is recommended as the Moulin stands alone in several hectares of its own property – but airport pickups and further transport can be arranged. Montbarla is 5 kilometres from the historic medieval village of Lauzerte – classed as “one of the most beautiful villages in France ” – and 15 minutes away from the quaint village of Montcuc , with its cobbled streets and not to be missed Sunday morning market! The market town of Moissac, the “home of Roman Art ” in this area, is also 15 minutes away. Local amenities include two nine hole golf courses, a Tennis Centre, and Equestrian Centre. The area is on the “ Grape Route ” and wonderful locally produced fruits, vegetables, foie gras and cassoulet can be found in the cafes and restaurants of nearby villages.
There is a large swimming pool and terraced area for sunbathing, a small fitness area, billiards, table tennis and a petanque court. The surrounding countryside is breathtaking and can be explored on foot or on the bicycles provided. With two hectares of land laid to lawn and trees there are plenty of areas to relax. Dine on the terrace by the pool or in the cool shade of the formal “ French Garden ” – or take a picnic upstream. The small stream that feeds the Moulin has created a shingle “beach” area – a lovely spot to sunbathe or from which to fish for carp, chub or trout.
Each gite has one double bedroom with an additional double sofa bed in the living area, giving the possibility of renting for a couple alone – or the whole property for a group of up to 16!
Each kitchen is fully fitted with electric cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer, coffee maker and all the cooking equipment you might need. Cool boxes are provided and picnic hampers and barbeques are available. A washing machine is also available – or a laundry and dry cleaning service can be provided. Bed linens and towels are of the highest quality – but please bring your own towels for use by the pool.
